German Genitive Case (Genitiv)

The genitive case shows possession or relationship. It's the equivalent of 'of' or apostrophe-s in English.

Key Rules

  • 1Articles: des (m/n), der (f), der (pl)
  • 2Masculine/neuter nouns add -s or -es
  • 3Answers: Wessen? (Whose?)
  • 4Used after genitive prepositions: wegen, während, trotz, statt

Examples

Das Auto des Mannes ist rot.

The man's car is red.

💡 'Des Mannes' shows possession - whose car it is.

Wegen des Wetters bleiben wir zu Hause.

Because of the weather, we're staying home.
